Osteopath
Crawley, West Sussex

“Osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance where possible, without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms occuring.” (General Osteopathic Council – GOSC) Our Osteopaths are fully registered with GOSc.

Hayley takes a holistic approach, using a broad range of hands-on osteopathic treatments (cranial, articulation, soft tissue, manipulation, lymphatic drainage, dry needling) to assist the patient through the body’s adaptive and healing processes. Pre/re-habilitation exercises are incorporated to allow the patient to maintain the benefits of treatment and provide prevention. Hayley has in-depth experience working with over 50’s and systemically complex patients, she also treats expectant mothers, infants and babies.

Training and Registration

Osteopaths are regulated by law and recognised as an allied health profession by NHS England. This gives them a similar status to dentists or physiotherapists and guarantees the equivalent high level of care. By law, an osteopath must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) to practise in the UK. Before an osteopath can obtain registration, they must attain specialist degree-level training, either a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) or integrated Masters (MOst.), plus complete over 1000 hours of clinical placements (direct patient contact time).

To maintain their registration with GOsC, which is renewed annually, osteopaths must meet mandatory continuous professional development (CPD): keeping skills and knowledge up-to-date and maintaining high standards of professional development

FAQs

Another aspect of osteopathy that is a very gentle approach (but can have powerful effects!), is Cranial Osteopathy. It focuses on relieving stress and tension throughout the body. Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel for subtle changes of rhythms in the cranium, spinal column and nervous system. Tension and torsions are released with specific subtle techniques. This treatment encourages the body to be balanced and find optimum health. Cranial treatments are effective in addressing a wide range of conditions in people of all ages, from birth to old age.

Effects of the treatment

No two people react in the same way, but temporary effects that people experience after treatment range from feeling of well-being to a worsening of symptoms while the body is adjusting to the changes that have been brought about. The most common side-effect is an inflammatory response, but can also include:

  • Soreness/tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Tiredness
  • Headache

Your osteopath will have given you advice to minimise these, and they should disappear within a day after treatment. You should always call if they persist or worsen.

Osteopathy can also help pregnant and post natal women. Treatment helps the mother prepare for, and adapt to the postural changes that occur in pregnancy.
Changes that Osteopathy can help with includes back and neck pain, headaches, SPD and pelvic pain, shoulder pain and tension in the thoracic and pelvic diaphragms – which predisposes the mother to problems like heartburn or varicose veins.Post natal treatment helps the body function return to normal, and resolves tension from the changes of pregnancy and the effects of delivery. If not dealt with these can predispose a mother to problems like back pain, headaches, stress incontinence and bowel disruptions, all of which could contribute to postnatal depression. A mother is usually advised to return for treatment 4-6 weeks after birth to help restore their body to normal function.

Loose fitting clothes are best so we are able to move your joints freely and will be more comfortable throughout the session. We may ask you to remove items of clothing like top or trousers so we can observe your posture and movements more accurately – after which you can put said item back on if you wish.

Osteopaths use wide variety of osteopathic treatment techniques. These techniques may include rhythmic joint movements, soft tissue and connective tissue stretching or high velocity thrust techniques (which often give an audible click) to improve the range of movement of a joint. Gentle massage and stretching techniques are often used, particularly when treating children or elderly patients.
Your osteopath will also give you advice on what to avoid to reduce the likelihood of aggravating the injury and potential adaptation you may want to make to your lifestyle to maintain and encourage healthy living.

Your first visit with us is approximately 60 minutes. Follow up appointments last 30 minutes.

The next 12hrs post treatment you can feel sore like you’ve had a gym workout or post-exercise soreness, however this normally last anymore than 24hrs. Feel free to give us a call if you have any concerns.

Some people can feel tired post-treatment from having time to relax and having muscles and joints worked on within the treatment session.
