Many clients come to me stating they are frustrated because conventional medical treatment has not been effective in helping them get the health results they want. They tell me they are tired of taking medical drugs and they want to try homeopathy.
Homeopathy is a holistic science and as such it addresses the whole person – physical symptoms, emotions, genetic influences, stressors, and the underlying causes of your health problems. Homeopathy views symptoms as the body’s natural response in fighting an illness. Homeopathic remedies, when properly prescribed, can eliminate the underlying cause of disease, thus establishing a healthy balance between our body and the environment.
Safe and easy to use
Addresses the issues rather than trying to hide them
Can help from the common cold through to pains, aches and seasonal fevers
Homeopathy offers individual and integrated treatment using potentised medicines with the aim of triggering the body’s natural system of healing. Homeopathy is the second largest system of medicine in the world today, as recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Like with like
Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat ‘like with like’, that is, a substance which causes certain symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms. For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness and agitation, so according to this principle, when made into a homeopathic medicine, it could be used to treat people with these symptoms. However, one major difference with homeopathic medicines is that substances are used in minimum dose which make them non-toxic.
A homeopath’s job is to gain a thorough understanding of your health and the exact symptoms you are experiencing. With detailed knowledge they can find a homeopathic medicine (known as a ‘remedy’) that matches you and your symptoms as closely as possible.
During the first consultation, your homeopath will ask lots of questions to build up a complete picture, taking into account a wide variety of factors such as medical history, personality traits, stress triggers, likes and dislikes, lifestyle and dreams.
Your homeopath wants to understand what is unique about you, and how your body and mind express themselves. Because homeopathy looks at the whole picture, patients who have the same diagnosed illness – hay fever, for example – are each likely to need different homeopathic medicines.
This first consultation will usually take one hour, you will be asked many questions and some of them will seem strange for those not used to homeopathy. The practitioner is building up a picture of your unique make up, a bit like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.
Homeopathic treatment has an excellent safety record and because homeopathic medicines are non-toxic, they can be used by babies, children and during pregnancy.
Homeopathic medicines (which homeopaths call remedies) are made from plant, chemical, mineral or animal sources, and are prepared by specialist homeopathic pharmacies using a careful process of dilution and succussion (a specific form of vigorous shaking).
Your homeopath will prescribe your remedy following the consultation. It will be given in tablet, pillule, (a small pill), liquid or occasionally powdered form. Because homeopathic remedies work in a different way from conventional medicines, do make sure that you understand the instructions before you take your remedy – often, only one or two doses are prescribed, followed by a period of waiting to gauge the response.
In the UK, remedies come in a variety of potencies. Higher potencies are more diluted and succussed. Your homeopath will prescribe the one best suited to you.
The fact that homeopathic medicines are so highly diluted has led some scientists and lobby groups to say that homeopathic medicines can’t possibly work because they are ‘nothing but water’.
However, research suggests that the vigorous shaking during the manufacturing process of homeopathic remedies changes the properties of the water that the original substance is dissolved in. This results in preparations that can exhibit biological activity at very high dilutions – as has been demonstrated in laboratory experiments.
You can safely use your homeopathic remedy alongside conventional drugs. It will not interfere with the action of any medicines prescribed by a doctor.
Homeopathic treatments involve a gradual process of change towards better health. The first follow-up is usually about four weeks after the first prescription, although in some cases it may be sooner.
The second session tends to be shorter than the first – normally half an hour. Your homeopath will ask about changes that have occurred, using their detailed notes as a reference point, before deciding on the next step in your treatment.
The number of consultations that may be needed is difficult to predict – it depends on a number of factors such as the age of the patient, how long the symptoms have been going on and your response to your prescription.
